How Garmin pricing actually works

Garmin does not publish public coupon codes. What it runs is a rolling sales page at garmin.com/en-US/c/promotions/ where individual products get a marked-down price for a stretch of weeks, with a footnote that offers cannot be combined with any coupon, discount, promotion or rebate. On 09/28/2026 that page held Tacx indoor trainers (FLUX 2 down $200, NEO Motion Plates down $100, Alpine gradient simulator down $100), dog-training handhelds and motorcycle navigators. Filtering the page to wearables showed nothing. If you want a Forerunner, Venu, Instinct or fenix, the honest answer on that date was full list price on garmin.com, or a retailer. The only codes Garmin issues are personal ones, such as the up to 2 discount codes every 180 days that longer-term Garmin Connect+ subscribers can generate, and Garmin Support says it offers no military, student, teacher or first-responder discounts.

List prices on the smartwatch page the same day: Forerunner 70/170 from $249.99, Instinct 3 from $249.99, vivoactive 6 at $299.99, Venu 4 from $549.99, Forerunner 570 at $549.99, Forerunner 970 at $749.99, fenix 8 from $799.99 and the new fenix 9 from $999.99.

Two things soften the price on any order:

• Shipping is free on every garmin.com order, and free second-day shipping is included on most orders of $199 or more after discounts. That applies to Puerto Rico, which matters for this site’s owner and for readers here.
• Returns are 30 days from delivery for merchandise in original condition. Opened software, downloadable items and custom “Design Your Own Watch” builds are nonrefundable, so a custom Venu or Forerunner is a decision, not a trial.

The subscription question

This is the part that changed most. Garmin’s watches still do not need a paid plan. The comparison chart on Garmin’s own Connect+ page lists details of every tracked activity, health stats, performance metrics and Garmin Coach training plans as free features, and the standard Garmin Connect app syncs the watch, keeps your history and shows the training metrics. What is new is Garmin Connect+: $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year, with a free trial for first-time subscribers, activated inside the app. It adds premium insights on top of what the watch already reports.

The total-cost math over three years of ownership:

Take the free trial (first-time subscribers only), decide before it ends, and cancel in the app if the extra screens do not change how you train. Keeping the watch without a plan is a real advantage over membership-only wearables such as WHOOP.

What the VO2 max estimate is worth

Garmin’s marketing calls VO2 max “the defining measure of cardiorespiratory fitness” and says the watch estimates it from pace against heart rate during normal runs, without a test protocol (Garmin Technology: VO2 Max). The independent data is mixed, and neither study treats the watch as a substitute for a lab test:

Practical reading: the 920XT’s average error in the 2019 study was 3.8 ml/kg/min, so a change of one or two points month to month is inside the noise. Neither study tested how well the watch tracks change over time, so treat the number as a rough guide, not a measurement.

Warranty and the cheapest honest path

The consumer limited warranty is one year on non-aviation products, covers defects only (no scratches, no battery wear, no water or accident damage), and a repaired or replaced unit carries 90 days or the remainder of the original year, whichever is longer. Garmin may ship a “Recertified” device as the replacement. There is no refurbished store to buy those units directly.

The cheapest path on 09/28/2026:

1. Pick the model, then check the promotions page with the wearables filter. Empty today does not mean empty in November; this page will be rechecked.
2. Buy on garmin.com if the price matches a retailer: 30-day return and free shipping to Puerto Rico. If a retailer is cheaper, confirm its return terms first, since Garmin notes restocking fees may apply at retailers.
3. Skip Connect+ until you have used the free trial and can name one screen you would pay for.

What changed since 2012

In 2012 this site’s affiliate links ran through Commission Junction. Today Garmin’s GPS running watches start at $249.99 (Forerunner 70/170), the same smartwatch page lists the vivosmart 5 fitness tracker at $149.99, and Garmin has added the optional Connect+ subscription while keeping the watch fully usable without it.

Affiliate status: Garmin runs its own “Garmin Affiliate & Ambassador Program” on a CreatorIQ-hosted portal with a Media track for bloggers and editorial sites (garmin.com/en-US/ambassadors-and-affiliates/affiliates/, sign-up at ambassadors.garmin.com/media). A Garmin US listing also appears on FlexOffers (last updated 02/24/2025); its current status there is unverified. This site has not applied yet, so nothing on this page is an affiliate link.
